What to wear for family photos

Your greatest love captured

So you’ve locked in your Family Photoshoot and now you’re thinking ‘oh gosh, what am I going to wear’ … What you wear for your session greatly impacts how your photos will turn out. So don’t underestimate the power of having a well coordinated wardrobe for the family. Let me help make this easier for you by sharing my top tips below.

Location, where is your photoshoot going to be? Taking into consideration what season it is. Once the location is decided choose outfits that will compliment the colours in the surrounding landscape. This is something you can chat to your photographer about if you are stuck!

Start with Mum’s outfit & build from this. I personally prefer long floaty dresses that are fitted on top with sleeves. It is equally as nice to have dresses that allow your shoulders to show, this is great for those intimate moments when you’re snuggled up to your little ones, showing skin helps enhance mood and connection. Dresses are a great option because it creates movement which captures beautifully in photographs. Otherwise you can do a skirt and top combo as well! Keeping in mind, I live in Tasmania and it can become very cold, so comfort is important! Sometimes jeans can be great if styled appropriately. Just pick something you know is going to be complimentary to the colours in your location. You can visit my pinterest link here, which has some outfit inspo in it.

Choose your colour palette based off Mum’s chosen outfit and having two or three coordinating colours with that. You can look at colour wheels and also the pinterest board that I will pop in the links. Coordinating colours but not too matchy matchy.

Tasmanian Family Photographer - What to wear for photos

Variety is a must! Textures, subtle patterns, layers and accessories. Such as hats, cardigans, suspenders (with boys it can be pulled up or dropped down), long socks for girls wearing shorter dresses or skirts, blankets, layered clothing.

Things to avoid;

  • long dangly necklaces as they can get caught

  • large logo’d clothing (can be very distracting in your images)

  • loud patterns which can take away from the overall aesthetic.

Details ~ I like to get close, detailed shots. So avoiding things like chipped fingernail polish. Either have them freshly painted or taken off prior to the session. For hair, I personally prefer hair down or hair half up / half down because when the wind captures it, it adds movement, depth and looks beautiful. Otherwise braids work great as well!

For Bub’s ~ Nappy Covers if you think their nappies will show in photos. These are great underneath clothing or even really nice just on their own.

Your comfort is the most important thing. Dress appropriately for the season ~ you do not want to be too hot or too cold during your session. This will make your experience more enjoyable.

I do have a few options with my client wardrobe which you are more than welcome to have a look at. I am continuously adding to this and I will pop in some recommendations of my favourite places to shop for clothing as well. I am all about making the experience for my clients as easy, fun and relaxed as possible. This really brings out the most beautiful photos for families.
