What to Wear for Family Photos
A guide by Tegan Murray Photography
What to Wear
Let’s keep this simple.
The best family photos don’t come from perfectly styled outfits. They come from connection, cuddles, laughter, movement, and being together.
If you’re standing in front of your wardrobe feeling overwhelmed, take a breath and remember: this doesn’t need to be complicated.
Things I love
Linen dresses and shirts
Chunky knits
Layers
Bare feet at the beach
Flowy dresses that move in the wind
Well-loved denim
Loose braids
Hair worn down
Cosy coats in winter
Clothes that look lived in and loved
DO:
Coordinate, don’t match
Choose a few colours that work well together and build everyone’s outfits around those tones. Think creams, earthy browns, soft blues, sage greens, rusts and warm neutrals. Nobody needs to be wearing the exact same thing.
Dress for the location
Whether we’re at the beach, in the bush, or chasing golden light through a paddock, choose colours that work with the landscape rather than compete with it. Tasmania already provides the backdrop.
Add some texture
Linen, knitwear, denim, chunky cardigans, wool coats and layers all photograph beautifully. Texture adds interest without feeling busy.
Wear something that feels like you
This is the most important one. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit, worrying about a dress riding up, or wearing something you’d never normally choose, it will show. Comfort always wins.
DON’T:
Overthink it
Seriously. You do not need to buy an entirely new wardrobe for family photos.
Match everyone perfectly
We’re photographing your family, not a uniform. A little variety creates a much more natural and timeless look.
Choose clothing with large logos, graphics or text
These tend to draw attention away from the people in the photograph.
Go overboard with patterns
A pattern or two is lovely. Five different patterns competing for attention is another story.

A Little Reminder
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is to create photographs that feel like your family.
The messy cuddles.
The wind-blown hair.
The belly laughs.
The chaos.
That’s where the magic lives.
